Introduction & How to use this course
First of all, welcome to my Unreal Engine Performance Optimization course! Thank you so much for enrolling and being a part of my latest endeavour!
Please read the following so you have a good understanding of how this course is built and what to expect!
How to use this Course
This course is structured a little differently than my other content in that each section can be watched standalone. We won't be building a game from scratch, and instead will dig into the available profiling tools, and performance tricks for many of Unreal's features.
All video lessons include text descriptions for easy reference, and will contain additional tricks, resources, talks, hidden CVARs and whatever else may be of value without necessarily a good fit for the video itself. Don't miss out!
Tip: Use the playback speed in the video player to play at 1.25x
Gameplay & Graphics Learning Tracks
It's now much easier to skip any content that doesn't apply to you. Check out the Learning Tracks in the following lessons to find a curriculum that best fits your role on the team. Indies may want to watch everything!
Every team and studio is different, this also means it difficult to define clear borders in a generalized way. This is how I defined the learning tracks:
- Gameplay: Engineers, Technical Designers. Primarily CPU-oriented
- Graphics: (Tech) Artists, certain engineers. Primarily GPU-oriented
Some lessons are clearly targeted towards specific roles whereas others are for a more general audience. I try my best to make this clear from the titles, descriptions, and video intros so you know when you can skip a video that's outside of your desired field.
Certain videos will mention other lessons as recommendations since so many performance scenarios can't be simplified to a single factor and may affect multiple systems.
Resources & Self Study Lessons
Certain lessons are included as resource collections or "self study" and may not always contain video content. These are added to provide insight into subjects you should be aware of and may continue exploring on your own. The course resources provide an initial kickstart of information and several curated resources to explore.
You see whether a lesson is text-only or video from the lesson's icon. In some cases a video will still be produced and the text serves as an "early look" so you can already get some insights and takeaways without having to wait. In this case that will always be mentioned in the text description.
Additional Content
New content may be added to fill gaps that didn't make it into the initial launch of the course. Where possible, I'll notify students about these updates via email.
Unreal Engine Releases
To stay relevant and compatible, new lessons are always recorded using the latest available release. At this time most lessons are based on UE 5.4, with newer additions recorded with 5.5.
Important improvements or changes after new releases will be mentioned in the text descriptions of lessons as the engine will continue to be updated. You may be interested to check out my performance highlights to be released with every new version. This is part of the first section of the course.
Feedback
I greatly appreciate all feedback on the videos. I'll address your questions and will improve the content if necessary. Your feedback will help shape the course and future content!
